UK TECHNOLOGY READY TO SET THE WORLD A "LIGHT"
One dimmable ballast that does the work of 200, operates anywhere in the world and powers any fluorescent tube up to 2.4m while operating at 90% efficiency will be in production when the Suffolk-based developers can find a suitable manufacturer.
For the last two years EnLight Technologies has been securing worldwide patents for its unique product. Currently, most manufacturers make at least 200 different ballasts - the device that powers a fluorescent tube - to suit different types of lamps and the various power supplies around the world. These ballasts typically achieve 70% efficiency - 30% of the power being lost as heat.
One EnLight ballast will not only operate in any country with any light, it will also power and dim any number of light fittings up to 120W. So, for the first time, two 2.4m fluorescent tubes can be dimmed and use the same ballast.
This also offers significant savings. A ballast has been required for every tube in a fitting, regardless of its power rating. Now four 30W tubes can be employed with one EnLight ballast - reducing the installation cost by 75% and achieving significant savings in running costs because of the EnLights's 90% efficiency.
The ballast also makes it possible for the more efficient fluorescent tubes to be used in Third World countries. The varying voltage levels in some developing nations has made it impossible to reliably get a conventional fluorescent to start. The EnLight ballast can start and operate on a minimal voltage across the range from 90-265V AC.
Enlight managing director, David Aarons said, "Our ballast is not only radically different in the way it operates, it is also cheaper to produce and much lighter than conventional ballasts. But, not only will it be advantageously priced to compete in existing markets worldwide, it will open up markets in developing countries that have not been able to adopt fluorescent tubes.
"Now we have the patents in place to protect our invention, we're looking for licensees in the UK and around the world to manufacture and distribute the product."
