Holistic automation: A step by step approach to building an efficient solution

Solar Panel Usage Data

Large estates and farms have numerous buildings across acres of land. To power
these buildings solar panels are often installed on the roof, with excess electricity sold back to the grid. The challenge is that solar panel arrays can go offline for various reasons. If they do, no electricity is generated and revenue is lost. It can be weeks or even months before someone from the estate drives over to physically check the panels and read the electricity meter.

Select Software has developed a solution to monitor the power generated by the solar panel without making any changes to the existing infrastructure. Real-time data is streamed wirelessly from the panels and presented on a web-based dashboard. This dashboard can be viewed either on a computer in the main estate office or on a mobile app. Immediate visibility provides insight into, how many kilowatts of electricity is being generated at any one time.
The time and effort taken to physically check the solar panels is reduced to a quick glance of a live dashboard.

Production Line Monitoring

Once fruit or vegetables are harvested they are transported to large packing lines where they are sorted and packed ready for distribution. With different types of fruit and vegetables being harvested simultaneously, a single factory can contain many production lines. These production lines all vary as they contain different age of machinery and often produced by different manufacturers. The factory owner wanted a single monitoring solution to provide overall insight into all production lines within the factory. Crucially, no changes could be made to the existing machinery or processes, or any equipment replaced.
Select Software developed a monitoring solution that could be retrofitted to any machine, even older machines that do not contain electronics. The extracted data is then streamed directly to a web-based dashboard that can be accessed via a computer in the control room or on a mobile app. At a glance, operators can now see the live status of each line, and how effectively it is running and if there are any failures or issues. The dashboard also tracks any trends in the production line. These trends help improve decision making resulting in productivity gains.

 

Pump House - Remote Monitoring

Farming estates comprise various outbuildings all of which serve different purposes. In this case a pump house contains pumping equipment to supply water from the farm’s reservoir for use in the irrigation systems to water crops at different times of year.
Pump house buildings often have solar panels on the roof to generate electricity for the building with any excess sold to the grid. The challenge is monitoring both the status of the solar panels together with the electricity usage of the pump house without the need to drive over to the building to monitor the situation
Without making any changes to the infrastructure or equipment, and utilising only the technology currently in place, Select Software installed a discreet monitoring solution. The data from both the solar panels and pump house equipment is streamed to a live web-based dashboard. This dashboard, viewed either on a computer or a simple mobile app shows visually the kilowatts generated by the solar panels and the kilowatts used in the pump house. The dashboard also captures other information including whether equipment has been shut down when not in use.

Grain Store - Remote Monitoring

The grain store is an essential building on any farming estate. Once crops have been harvested, it is vital that they are stored effectively. This preserves the quality of the grains before they are shipped for processing. These grain store buildings are typically large industrial structures made of concrete or metal with slider or roller doors. The grain is stored in two bays on top of a mesh floor with an air duct running down the middle. Very large fans distribute warm air and are carefully controlled to ensure the right temperature and humidity is maintained.
The challenge the estate owner has is that the grain store is largely left to its own devices. If a
problem occurs, no one knows unless they drive over to the building to physically check.

Select Software developed and a simple monitoring solution without changing or replacing any equipment. Live updates from the grain store are streamed to a dashboard. This can be viewed either on a computer or a simple mobile app, showing vital data such as are the fans running and how much electricity is being consumed. Select Software can also install a Solar Panel monitoring solution to tie into the same dashboard by way of the same interface.  The estate Manager can see immediately how much electricity the solar panels are generating, and exporting to the grid, and how much electricity the building is using.
